Via Francigena

Route

The Via Francigena, also known as Frankenweg, are paths, which pilgrim used for travelling from France or England to Rome, specifically tot he graves of Paul and Peter. A well famous is the name Via Romea, which also leads over smaller routes o Rome.

The today officially calles Via Francigena, sorts itself out through the information of archbishop Siegrich of Canterburry, who 990 a.c travelled this way to Rome.

All paths lead to Rome.

The Via Francigena stretches from England through France till Switzerland. After this you will cross the huge St.Bernhard into the Aostal, coming from Lausanne. A special highlight is a hospice on top of the St.Bernhard, but as well the rest of the cities have a lot of charm. A great journey to be alone with yourself, find new people and see some new landscapes. Accommodation is quite easy to find. And there are a lot of hotels and BnB on the way.

Pilgrimage through beautiful scenery

on
26. June 2018

Strangely enough, I don’t meet a single pilgrim today. I am really the only one on the road. And once it is a wonderful, beautiful day – a lot of sun and only 35 degrees . Really convenient for a pilgrimage. After the experiences of…

The source of life

on
27. June 2018

Today is one of those days when I open my eyes fully motivated. Beautiful weather and a nice pilgrimage day is coming up. So pack up quickly and off I go. I plan to walk just over thirty kilometers today. After a few minutes I am not sure if…

Washing day and easy way to Piacenza

on
28. June 2018

My accommodation is really not that great, despite the beautiful place at the riverside. A shared room, which I have for myself . But it’s pretty messy. The floor is dirty and shower and toilet are brown. So I do without a shower and lie down in my clothes…

The sun is on my side

on
29. June 2018

In the morning I am on my way early. I leave already just shortly after eight o’clock. Today’s destination is called Fiorenzuola d’Arda. A march of more than 32 kilometers is waiting for me. It is already quite warm in the morning. But that will get worse. In the…

Last day in the plains

on
30. June 2018

If yesterday was a hot day, today is even hotter. For the first time the mercury exceeds 40 degrees and it feels great. That would be a super therma lift while playing golf that would carry the balls a few meters further without any problems. For a non-distance…

on
3. July 2018

You must have been surprised not to have heard from me in the past days. But it is not always easy. The day before yesterday I had to take an unplanned day of rest due to lack of accommodation. Yesterday I finally left and walked about 25 kilometers….

Mountain hiking is quite a challenge

on
4. July 2018

Today’s stage is a challenge for the pilgrims and especially for me. I have about 1100 meters of altitude uphill ahead of me and about thirty kilometers of distance. I would like to make a little progress today, for tomorrow there is only a short stage waiting for me….

Meters climbed take their toll

on
5. July 2018

Berceto is really worth a visit. Yesterday I explored the old town, which has a lot to offer. Several bars and cafes invite you to stay. But also the Romanesque cathedral from the 12th century is beautiful. Unfortunately the ruin of the Castello is currently closed for visitors. So…

Good food and a nice landlady

on
6. July 2018

Yesterday‘s hardships were compensated by an evening in Petremoli. When you are on a pilgrimage, good food works miracles. The town is really nice and lively. People are sitting in bars enjoying their Aperos. Anyway, I go back to my room quite early, because I have to do my…

Die Via Francigena lässt mich nicht los

By
on
25. October 2018
